This product is used in my 2009 CR TDI. Before anyone starts to say that this is not 507.00 specified by VW, I want to say I know. I started using the 5W-40 interchangeably with the 5W-30, and they are almost identical products. A 5W-40 motor oil cannot be labeled under 507.00, but these are very similar formulations. There are many TDI owners who have been running this oil for a while in their CR engines with no issues. Both Mobil 1 ESP formulas are used commonly in the CR engine, and you can spend days researching this online with no clear winner. This is a very good product. Both have a sulfated ash content of 0.6%, which extends life of the DPF. The viscosity difference between these 30 and 40 weight oils are 3.6 vs. 3.8 cP, respectively. They almost overlap.

Here's where the big difference comes. The 507.00 oils are very difficult to find in the US. For most TDI owners, you wind up ordering this stuff or going to a Pep Boys to hope they don't raise the price on you. Well, recently, the local Pep Boys for me went from $7.99 to $8.99 to $11.99 to $12.99. At some point, enough is enough. It's not a Mobil price increase, it's PB. So, to find the 5W-40 product on Amazon for $51.77 is amazing. When you start paying $14/quart with tax, it was getting out of hand. This is nearly half off the price you can find it anywhere else. You also don't have to worry about going to pick it up or the product being out of stock when you get there (that is partly why I started using the Formula M in the first place).

Now, some may argue that the Formula M is a better product for the TDI, while others won't touch it because it lacks the certification label. I truly am not concerned with the minor differences between the two. I live in a very hot part of the US where you would prefer the 40 weight oil, even if it is only marginally more viscous. I'm just glad I'm getting this stuff for a little over $50 a case now.

Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w40 is a quality product. This is a synthetic motor oil with a low ash formula, to protect the emissions systems of today's complex diesel vehicles.

Specifically, this oil is for use in today's diesel powered Mercedes automobiles.

It should be noted that some dealers have accidentally (if that is the term) used this diesel spec oil, 229.51 in gasoline spec cars.

Gasoline cars require Mercedes spec 229.5. The spec numbers may look similar, but they are indeed different.

The gasoline version have many more additives in them, to keep the oil suitable for long service intervals that Mercedes advises.

There is also a non-ESP version of Formula M that some dealers use in gasoline cars, which is indeed approved. However, you will not the gasoline application version of Formula M for consumer retail commonly. Therefore, if you see a Formula M on a regular store's shelves, it likely this diesel, ESP formula, which is not for your gasoline Mercedes.

The easiest to find 229.5 spec Mercedes approved oil for gasoline powered cars is Mobil 1 0w40.

Please keep this QUALITY product for use only in your diesel powered Mercedes. It serves that application beautifully!

Since the first SAE number refers to cold viscosity ("W"inter), it meets the VW spec on cold viscosity same as the ESP 5W-30 (VW certified oil). The second number refers to hot viscosity tested at 210F/100C degrees. Unfortunately, the SAE standard itself is not precise due to the variance range it allows. While other brands may have significant variance from 30 to 40, these two products do not. Mobile 1 data says the 30 has a low sheer viscosity of 12.1 cSt, while the 40 has 13.4 cSt (11% difference). In my opinion, the 30 is actually worse for the engine and this is why: The newer HTHS (High Temperature High Sheer) test is performed at 302F/150C degrees. Turbocharged engines in their high stress/pressure areas can approach these temperatures. The 30 tested at 3.58 mPa*s and the 40 at 3.8 mPa*s (a higher number equals better engine wear protection). The trade off is that it slightly lowers fuel efficiency and this is why most manufacturers are lowering their viscosity recommendations. They have government agencies pressuring them to increase fuel efficiency but we the owners are losing engine longevity similar to what ethanol is doing. If this oil was harmful to common rail diesels, Mercedes would not be recommending it. Instead, Mercedes is putting its customer's engine longevity before minor mpg gains (basically telling the EPA to take a hike).

Bought this oil for an oil change in a VW TDI. It meets or exceeds VW 507.00 specification and does it for less money than many imported brands shipped to your door. I bought this in conjunction with a Mann filter and a set of drain plugs and comes in $10.00 cheaper than anywhere else.Mobil 1 105856-CASE M 5W-40 ESP Formula Motor Oil 1 Quart, (Pack of 6)

This is the right oil for my ML 350 Bluetec diesel. Very hard to find locally. I was happy to see there was a rebate, and did receive a check in about 4 weeks. Great oil and a great price delivered to my door.
