I was frustrated as I repeatedly failed trying to remove the oil filter canister from my 2011 Camry 2.5 4cyl engine. I had a couple of older fluted cap wrenches that would not stay engaged to the canister when I applied the torque required to unscrew it. Each time, the cap wrench would jump off the canister. So I purchased this wrench which is the PERFECT tool for removing the canister. It is made of cast aluminum, and engages the canister using the flutes AND the slots on the perimeter of the tool. These slots grab the tabs located on the sides of the canister. I used a 27mm socket wrench to turn the wrench and canister. This canister has an o-ring which causes a beneficial friction seal with the housing as it screws into the housing, so the socket/ratched wrench is a good solution for accomplishing the several turns required to finally get the canister off. Conversely, when re-installing the canister, the tool does a fine job of screwing it back into the housing, right up to the end of the thread travel. Don't torque it beyond snug....it's not required. This oil filter wrench is highly recommended....it's a professional quality, sturdy tool.

This is the filter wrench for the 2010 Toyota Prius. I wasted money on two filter wrenches from local auto part stores that were the correct size (in millimeters and flutes) for the Prius oil filter cover but could not grip the filter cover tight enough to unscrew it. I took a ride to my local Toyota dealership and observed the filter wrench they used. It looked just like this one except they paid a lot more than $25 at the Snap-On tool truck. The trick to the effectiveness of this wrench is the cutout slots that fit over equally positioned flanges on the vehicle's filter cover, making removal of the cover a snap. I could not find filter wrenches with these cutout slots in my local auto part stores. I don't think that is by accident, but rather by design. Obviously, making self-help oil changes more difficult does not benefit the do-it-yourselfer. And with synthetic oil increasing oil changes to 10,000 miles, who's loosing in this deal...you do the math. If you want to change your own oil on a 2010 Prius, this is the filter wrench.

My 2010 Prius oil filter housing wouldn't budge, no matter what I tried. The standard end-cap filter wrench kept slipping off as soon as I applied torque. Fortunately, a Web search revealed owners with the same problem and a solution. They were right! The PBT71110 worked like a champ. It's designed not only to grip the fluted filter housing on the end, but also via side slots. It has both a 3/8" ratchet drive slot and a 27mm socket fitting. Unfortunately, that's one big honkin' socket, not likely to be found in the average home tool box. Most people will have to use the drive slot instead of the socket......This is a must-have tool for anyone doing Prius oil changes. I never would have gotten the housing off without it.
