Cheap K&N PS-1002 Oil Filter

I bought this filter mainly because of the K&N brand name and because most reviews said it was a okay filter, although possibly inferior to the Toyota OEM filter (90915-YZZD3) for about the same price or cheaper! Now, I think other reviews also bought into the K&N name, but after seeing a few reviews where they cut into the filter, it shows that all oil filters have some area where they are lacking, even the ones that sell for 2X the cost of this one.

I have no way to tell if this filter is working any better or worst than any other, so I just change it often and hope that it's working as it should! Just make sure that it has a bypass valve and also a anti-drain back gasket although they differ in how they work and what material they use for these important features. I don't remember how this one stacks up to the others in regards to those two things.

One thing that you will immediately notice is the height of this filter compared to the Toyota OEM. It's much shorter, maybe about a 1/2" difference between the two, but the K&N seems to be the same height as most of the other non OEM I have used, so common among the "third party" choices.

Interesting that Amazon chose to ship the filter out of the box! Meaning that the filter was just rolling around in the shipping box with the K&N retail box folded up. I have no idea why they did that as the box was more than big enough to accommodate the other items in the box and since the K&N filter does not have any covering on the bottom, it was dusty. Now the Toyota filter has plastic covering the bottom to keep dust, dirt and other grit out of the filter (and isn't that what a filter is made to do!) Not good when that stuff is in the filter before you even install it!

My suggestion is to buy the OEM Toyota filter (90915-YZZD3) and you can get it at Amazon either as a single filter, filter with drain plug gasket, 5 pack and a full case of 10.

I have used all kinds of filters for my vehicle including the supposedly superior OEM (Mazda). K&N have turned out to be the best value. Super performance and good price. My only issue with this particular model is it leaves off the nut for torquing on/off the filter (understand because it is a performance filter the nut can cause a restriction issue) and it does not have the grit to help grasp the filter. It will be a bear to take the unit off without a wrench and even so, the under carriage screen leaves little room to get a wrench on the filter and give room to twist it. May have to take the screen off (royal pain in the *!!)

Overall super filter and price, but the lack of easy on/off costs it a star.

Beats the OEM filter by a country mile! I no longer hear that destructive oil-starved sound when starting my truck.

This is the least restrictive filter I've ever used on my pickup.

You can argue that this filter probably doesn't remove wear-causing particles as well as a more restrictive filter.

Probably true, but your engine doesn't care if the oil is slightly cleaner if that filter restricts its flow (especially when cold).

I'll be using this filter from now on, and I like to price-to-performance ratio.

With my old filters after 4000 miles old oil was completely black, with the K&N only a dark brown at 4000 miles. Been able to go longer between oil changes.

K&N is a great brand and this filter works as great as any. I would imagine better, but I haven't done any technical testing.

I have been using Royal Purple off and on since the 90's and it is some of the best oil I have ever used. BMW recommends a 20w50 for my 04 R1150RT motorcycle. Since synthetic is getting harder to find, I have been using this for the last 3 oil changes and the engine is running noticeble quieter. Expensive but great oil.

I drive a 2002 Corolla. It is notorious for losing oil. After tons of research I discovered that the piston rings were poorly designed with too few and too small holes. This makes them susceptible to over heating and carbon deposits that plug them up. Redline oil has a very high flash point and doesn't leave carbon residue on the metal like other oils do. So although it won't solve an already existing problem (by itself), it does prevent the problem from progressing. I used to lose a quart of oil per tank of gas. Now, I don't lose any even after 7000 miles on the same oil.

Redline is one of the few oils (even among synthetics) that are ester based. Esters are cleaner and much more heat tolerant.Redline is expensive but if take extended drains into account, it becomes a lot more reasonable. They're a small American company who will take the time to answer any questions as well.

I use this oil (mixed with the 5W-20) in concert with this filter microGreen 101-1 Oil Filter which I consider to be the best filter on the market. They make an unbeatable combination in my opinion.

I believe Redline to be the best oil on the market.

Red Line Oil makes first class products within the oil industry. If you haven't done any research on them, you should. They are highly respected in the Racing world.

Our 2012 Honda Civic calls for 0w20 and recently crossed the 10,000 mile mark. Feeling that it's well "broken-in" I decided to make the permanent switch to Red Line. The additive package in this oil is very stout with high ZDDP and very high Moly content for an oil. The 1.8L engine in the Civic runs very smoothly with this oil. I have typically been stuck on 5,000 mile oil changes with over the counter synthetics, but now will run at least 7,500 miles on this oil. Most engines could likely go further than this as well.

I also love Red Line because they are a small independent company located in California. On top of that, their products are true synthetic oil(ester based). Not only is this a better oil, there is no foreign oil interest! The company is also very helpful. I've spoken with Dave and he's extremely helpful and will recommend products based on your needs. I will be using their D6 ATF next time I service the transmission. Also, I'll be switching our 2003 Corolla to their 0w30 and D4 ATF.

Note: This oil isn't officially licensed by the API due to the high ZDDP content(good thing) and also it's very expensive to get the license. This doesn't phase me though, the additive package and base stocks are superior to other oils in my opinion. Plus, in the VERY unlikely event your engine fails under warranty; the Magnuson-Moss warranty act protects you from your dealer denying a claim based on oil used. They would have to PROVE that the oil specifically caused the failure(highly unlikely).

I find that this is a quality oil with all the appropriate independent seals of approval. I tend to change my oil more frequently then needed so I can not tell you about the longevity of the oil but I can tell you that when I change my oil it comes out nice and dirty which is what you want. The oil should be cleaning and suspending the dirt.

I have ordered 5 (6) pack cases thus far over a few months. Every time I get it via UPS it has at least one or more bottles leaking all over the box. FedEx shipments always arrive perfect. So now I only order 2 day shipping so it will arrive on Saturday when FedEx is the only way I get deliveries. See my photo of a UPS box versus clean FedEx shipment. Both cases are boxed in a second box and no damage or crushed packaging. I am not sure if UPS drops them or tumbles them more but both boxes arrive with no physical damage. Although the UPS box always has oil leaking all over. Only 4 stars as I always get a leaking bottle due to packaging but still a very good oil for the price. Not sure if anyone else has the same issues I have.

This oil pan might work just fine for someone who has a small car that uses under five quarts of oil. But if your car has an oil capacity of more than five quarts or if you have more than one vehicle to change the oil at the same time, it might be inconvenient. IOW, it's on the small side. This also affects how it is positioned under the vehicle when changing oil. Lastly, the bottom needs to be reinforced so that moving it around under a car doesn't wear through the plastic bottom of the container.

On-line and in stores, I have been unable to find a replacement for my thirty-year-old drain pan that equals what I am replacing in capacity and quality.

I used this to change the oil on my motorycle (It's a 2013 Kawasaki Ninja 300 SE ABS). Some reviewers have said that their bike sits too low for this pan to fit under, but it was fine for mine. It's stock height, no lowering kit. The only issue I had was that the pan is not quite long enough to drain from both the bolt and the filter end at the same time, so a good bit of oil leaked onto the patio. Both the oil filter and the bolt will line up under the pan with about an inch to spare on either side.

I think what may have contributed to the oil missing the pan was that the oil spilled form the filter drain onto the bike's exhaust headers, which carried the oil slightly outside the pan's dimensions and dripped down the side of the pan. Also, when you got fill the pan, take both caps off, otherwise the thing will kind of gurgle and splash as air is forced out of the little hole you drain the oil into. I only have 2.2 quarts (or 2.4?) of oil in the bike, so it doesn't come near the other cap.

It doesn't really bother me that it spilled (patio already has lots of stains), but it might bother some people. Wish it were about 4-6 inches longer. Otherwise, it's a great idea to have a pan/disposal thing all in one place.

The design is good, but I had a couple issues. Despite being designed for motorcycles, it wouldn't fit under my bike (VRSCDX). Also, when I started draining the oil it couldn't keep up and oil overflowed the pan's drain area on top and spilled into the driveway (and we all hate that).

The only reason this isn't getting five stars is because the drain hole is the perfect size for the nut that holds back the oil. Once the bolt slid down into the whole and stopped the oil from draining properly, which promptly overflowed and got oil everywhere! That being said, when the nut is placed away this works great. It collects the oil wonderfully and all it needs is a quick wipe with a paper towel when your done.
